Good Guys vs Bad Guys: Personal Development Beyond the Illusion!

January 16, 2013 By OMM Solutions

Post Views: 341

Classifying Ourselves and Others

It’s hard to watch the news or look around ourselves without seeing so much strife. Outrageous acts against humanity seem commonplace, and it can be hard to digest. This strife can strike our own lives as well, and the sting of hurt feels even worse it is delivered by the hands of people you trust and love.

We have likely all experienced this sort of betrayal at work, in our home, or in our relationships.  It’s incredibly difficult and painful! When trust is broken, it feels as if the good guys have turned bad, and we wonder if they’ve been this way all along. When the “dark side” or “underbelly’ side
of someone is exposed, are these their “true colors” that shine through? Are we actually seeing who and what they really are, for the very first time?

It can be a natural reaction to want to classify people, groups, or even entire countries in one category or another. Almost instantly, we decide if a person is trustworthy, good, or bad. We can view situations and people as black or white, perhaps believing that these categories and divisions will create order and safety, and reduce our chances of being hurt. But does viewing those around us in such strict categories help or hinder our personal development?

If you look to your own life, there is likely something or somebody that you have a strong adverse reaction to. You may fundamentally disagree with their values, their choices, or their actions. They may go against every fiber of what you believe in or what you stand for. Is it this opposition then, that results in the “bad guy” branding? Look deeper. If in your mind someone else is the bad guy, and you are in opposition of them, does that somehow position you to be the “Good Guy”? Human nature is a funny thing – don’t you think?

In our profession of personal deveopment, we work with everyday people with everyday problems. How to unravel hurt and reistablish trust is a common dilemma for most people. I find that recommending movies can afford us a powerful window into someone else’s experience or story that we can often relate to.

Your James Bond assignment (should you choose to accept it) is to first watch the amazing movie “Crash” starring Sandra Bullock, Matt Damon. (Youtube trailer attached –  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqZKaH0bvyE ). When finished, make two lists of the movie characters: one indicating the good guys and the other for the bad guys in the film.

The next personal development step is for you to sit down and make your own list of who you think the bad guys are in your own life. This list will remain private, so there’s no need to hold back. This could be people you are aware of, but don’t personally know (e.g. politicians). It could include people at work or in your community. It could people who were at one time very close and dear to you.  This list usually spans time, calling on both your past and present life. What you may find as a common thread between these people is the sense of pain or even a distrust that you may experience when thinking of them.

Consider the movie, especially the areas of grey within the characters’ lives that shape their reactions and experiences, and then allow yourself to truly ponder.  Do you know who that other person is? Do you know who you are? What is it that separates the good and bad guys and is there a price to pay for that speration? When people and issues collide, what do you do with
the hurt of betrayal and how do you actually learn to trust again? Well my friends, that is the 10 million dollar question, with an answer to be unveiled soon.

Once you have completed this assignment, we encourage you to join us on the Global Alignment’s Facebook page to post and share your views of all that is challenging and wonderful about uncovering this very real dilemma.  We can all grow together.

Leadership Traits: Does Motivation Influence Manifestation?

Learning to Lead with Love

Are you ever curious why things turn out the way they do in your life or in your business?

There is a saying that goes, “if you don’t know where you are going, any road will do.” I find this to be true, and I would even go further to say, “if you don´t know who you are, anybody will do.” How much are you really aware of your own motives and how they manifest in the inner landscape (mind/emotions) of your body and even in the world around you?

When it comes to the big picture, I think we all imagine we are largely motivated to be good citizens of the world. But upon closer examination, can we really say that we fully know what lies behind or motivates the millions of rapid-fire choices we make every day?

There is a theory that at every moment we are motivated by one of two primal forces: fear or love. Love is a source that fuels or amplifies our vitality, and fear acts to drain or minimize our vitality. These influences can ultimately be the difference between happiness and depression. In every moment we are motivated by one or the other, regardless of whether it is a conscious decision or a function of automatic pilot.

Often, the choices we make from fear-based motives – and these include influences such as control, lack, insecurity, anger, resentment, jealousy, victim mentality, separation from others, ego competition, trying to “get” something, or a belief we are more than or less than others – have a way of multiplying that same negative energy back towards us.

There are many faiths and philosophies that believe that whatever energy you put out you get back, often in a greater amount.  That might simply mean the amplification of our own internal negative energy and/or an external physical manifestation of it. The truth is, we may never fully grasp how, when or where our energy creates influence or impact. It can infest our hearts, minds, bodies, or spirit. We may also fail to grasp the influence we have on people, nature or situations within the world in general.  Because we are often not able to tangibly “see” or “track” the interrelatedness of our energy, it may feel easy to image that we simply have no true responsibility or accountability in the grand scheme of things.  We can live our life focused on ourselves.

For many, the most important thing we can do each day is to internally align ourselves with the motive of “love” and interact with people and the world from that stance.  But perhaps I had better demystify what I mean by the overused term “Love.” Used here, love is simply a state of being that is in alignment with your authentic self which is absent of fear. The state of love is inclusive of traits like sameness, compassion, wholeness, accountability, connection, trust, giving, kindness and abundance.  Some people say that the state of love means that we view our wellbeing and the wellbeing of others with equal consideration. Coming from a place of love doesn´t mean we will always have power to attract or “manifest” the external “things, people or situations” that are out of our control, but that we often feel we “need to make us happy.”
It is a cruel illusion to imagine that others have a greater influence on the choice of our inner state than we do ourselves.  It´s so easy to put ourselves in a position of “fear” where we feel hostage to something outside of ourselves, when the reality is that we hold our own key that sets us free. Our power lies in our ability to choose our own inner landscape, motives and mindset, regardless of the circumstances of the outer world, people or situations within in.

To foster your own leadership traits, we encourage you pause for one full day and be more mindful of what truly motivates what and how you manifest. This will help you to better illuminate and choose your interactions with your life, family, business or the world.  Opportunity lies within these moments.  Identifying, and ultimately choosing your source of motivation (fear or love) can better poise us all to bring the best out of every situation, including our own experience of it. Every day offers you the chance to further develop the leadership traits that better equip us to deal with life´s challenges. Having objective support to further help you uncover your motives can be a revealing exercise.  Remember, small changes can have big impact! Let us know if we can help…

The 5 Love Languages

“Sometimes the way we think we show love best is not actually the best way to show love,” explains Zach Williamson, member of the Chapman Team. According to Dr. Gary Chapman, everyone has a primary way in which they prefer to receive love called their primary love language. When someone speaks this love language to them, it fills their love tank to the brim and, inadvertently, they feel loved.

Chapman has revealed five distinct languages from which our primary can be drawn:Words of Affirmation, Gifts, Physical Touch, Acts of Service, and Quality Time. We all feel loved in very specific ways and although our partner may indeed love us, if we do not speak or understand each other´s love languages, relationship issues develop. If you have been feeling stuck or misunderstood in love and connection, imagine the ways this key information can impact your communication and personal growth in your both your personal and professional life!

Dr. Chapman´s book The 5 Love Languages demonstrates how to recognize, give, and receive the love you, your partner, parents, children and friends require to feel loved and appreciated.

This book is a must read for everyone for the health of all your relationships! Order The 5 Love Languages today for yourself and for everyone you care about! We have found this is an absolute favorite for Global Alignment clients who aim to fuel their personal growth.

Embracing a Minimalist Attitude: A Personal Development Plan

March 15, 2012 By OMM Solutions

Post Views: 403

´There is no path to peace. Peace is the path.´ ~ Mahatma Gandhi, “Non-Violence in Peace and War”

Minimalism as a lifestyle is not a new trend. In fact, many of the world´s top minds embraced minimalism in one fashion or another. Ghandi was a minimalist by situation and Einstein reputedly had a closet full of black suites and white shirts so that he did not waste thought when dressing each morning.

Ours is a society that loves stuff. The more you seem to have, the happier you are apparently supposed to be – at least in theory. TV, print, and online media all throw more and more must have items at us all day, every day, making it is nearly impossible to refuse to buy more and more of the latest things while last month´s technology already is obsolete!

But can possessions actually make you happier? Do things provide the fulfilment that advertisers promise and, once possessed, bring the expected feeling of restful satisfaction? Happiness, peace, and serenity do not come with more stuff and, in many cases, we become a slave to our possessions. But hey, is not it possible to look at something lovely and have it bring back a memory or provide a sense of Joy? It is all about balance and considering your own mindful personal development plan.

In our consumer world it is becoming more about paring down your stuff: every six months go through your home, giving away or recycling all that you do not need. You will be surprised about how truly great “giving away” or “letting go of the pursuit” and “simplifying and sharing” make us feel. Forget about the “Jones” next door. Do your own thing and focus on connecting with others and making quality time for people you love that are behind their Blackberries and Nintendo. As we watch these trends shift, we predict that authentic sharing is becoming HIP!

To learn more about embracing a minimalist attitude, read Leo Babauta´s mnmlist blog and miss minimalist who eloquently explains ´being a minimalist isn´t only about white walls and empty spaces. It´s about eliminating the distractions that keep us from fully appreciating life.´ Its about a personal development plan that helps you access your passion, goals and potential in a simplified way!

Decluttering Our Minds Accelerates Our Personal Development

February 3, 2012 By OMM Solutions

Why should we simplify? Is a cluttered life the sign of a cluttered mind?

Dr. Gabor Maté, M.D. dedicates an entire chapter in Scattered Minds: A New Look at the Origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder to the importance of our physical space. Although he is writing about Attention Deficit Disorder, who in our culture of mass consumerism, latte-induced busy-ness, and two-second media bites does not have some experience with some of its effects on our wellbeing and personal development?

To combat those caffeine-agitated thoughts, here are some quick bits from Gabor´s insightful and inspired book that we feel are important to share with you to help create intentional transformation:

“Make a conscious choice about how to live.”

“No less than for children, conditions of his environment continue to have a direct and major impact on his emotions and thought processes…”

“Without the right conditions, the brain cannot develop new circuits or the mind new ways of relating to the world and to self. A person cannot become sane in the midst of the chaos she perpetuates around herself.”

“It is not a duty to clear some physical space so that his mind is not oppressed by clutter, but it is a sensible thing to do if the long term goal is development.”

“The adult with attention deficit disorder needs to know that the physical space she occupies can help to either harmonize or disorganize the mind.”

“Neglecting to honor their physical environment is to neglect themselves.”

Sweet, simple food for thought that fuels quality living and personal development.

There is advertising but Practitioners often feel it can be expensive. Part of this is learning how to get your name out there while building relationships and exposure so that your website can become a better tool that supports the vitality of your business.

The Essence of Gratitude and its Contribution to Your Happiness

December 26, 2011 By OMM Solutions

Post Views: 416

“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.” Cicero

We all understand the word gratitude. Our mothers taught us to say ´please´ and ´thank you´ at the appropriate times and to write letters of thanks to distant relatives who spent birthday cards was an important lesson growing up.  However, was this really teaching us about gratitude at a deeper level? Does this form of gratitude help to foster happiness?

Gratitude is defined as ´a feeling of thankfulness and appreciation, as for gifts or favours´ and ´a sense of obligation´ by The Free Dictionary, and a ´state of being grateful´ by Merriam-Webster.  Do any of these definitions give us even a glimmer of what gratitude means or the strength and depth of this intensely potent word?

Words to help remember and reframe the gratitude in us all:

“Saying thank you is more than good manners. It is good spirituality.” Alfred Painter

“Gratitude is riches. Complaint is poverty.” Doris Day

“To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch Heaven.” Johannes A Gaertner

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…. It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.” Melodie Beattie

“The deepest craving of human nature is the need to be appreciated.” William James

What are you thankful for? Some people believe that when they get what they want, that a state of gratitude will then follow. The problem with this thinking is that if we do not get what we want, our natural state of gratitude (and by association, happiness) is being held hostage.

In reality, it is when a person wants and appreciates what they already have that true and natural gratitude becomes a part of their present and every day lives.

“Gratefulness is the key to a happy life that we hold in our hands, because if we are not grateful, then no matter how much we have we will not be happy — because we will always want to have something else or something more.” Brother David Steindl-Rast

Across all of humanity, some of the greatest factors to a life of happiness and gratitude are a meaningful and authentic connection to others and the ability to contribute.

Although Christmas is behind us, the movie It´s a Wonderful Life is one of the most beautiful demonstrations of gratitude reframed.

Maybe it is time to find a cause that ignites not only the gratitude in your soul but also the passion in your actions.

A couple of places to look in order spark ideas as ways to connect and contribute:

Idealist.org – “an interactive site where people and organizations can exchange resources and ideas, locate opportunities and supporters, and take steps toward building a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives”.

Wikipedia Canadian Non-profit Organization Directory – a list of all Canadian non-profit organizations

Global Alignment recommends doing your own research before donating time or money to any charity or cause. However, these are great resource for learning and understanding about the many types of organizations available that need your help.

The Evils of Money and Other Myths

November 10, 2011 By OMM Solutions

Post Views: 588

Cindi´s Take: Counsellor & Wellness Practice Business Development

What does the concept of money mean to you and your Practice Building? What does the concept of money mean to you and your Practice Building?

What about the word ´money´? Instead of a sense of feeling empowered, inspired, and at peace, did you reactively shrink back with flickering judgments about commercialism, greed, scarcity, or excessive materialism? We have to ask ourselves, why is it that so many of us identify with one polarized view over the other?

Abundance is Essential to Practice Building & an Intentional Life

As a Life Counselor and Mental Health and Wellness Business Coach, the idea of abundance is a necessary part of creating a balanced business and intentional life. But there are many kinds of commodities in which we can experience abundance that often fall off of our perception charts. Many of these actually hold more importance to us than money. For example, we can have an abundance of vitality, time, health, kindness, friends, love, creativity, faith, clients, ideas, family, integrity, opportunities, purpose, and yes, there can be an abundance of ´money´. So why is there such controversy around this topic of money?

Well, our family system, our culture, our perceived social and economic status, our country, the media, and our interpretation of our faith also teach us how we have come to see and experience this concept of money. It is understandable that we should be confused in a society that inundates us with messages that ´desire´ somehow equals an actual ´need´ and that also teaches that money can purchase the object of most of our desires.

As I work with Private Practice Practitioners, we often need to peel down ways in which association and intention are side-swiping our lives. This word ´money´ and other words such as “business” often have a nice list of judgments plastered all over them. People can come to simply believe that our current experience is our likely future reality. Past experiences often do create present day judgments. Concepts like shame, hierarchy, conquest, oppression, scarcity, insecurity, greed, avoidance, competition, materialism, and isolation, the concepts of fear, judgments and failure start to immediately surface. These feelings and views leave people feeling so constricted and in anxious, that they get put on a shelf to address at “later”. We would rather put on pink glasses and try to think of things that create a sense of connection, support, encouragement, confidence, power, clarity, value, compassion, inspiration, and peace. As such, we resolve to leave things somewhat buried, hoping that out of site is out of mind. But the fragrance of “lack” lingers in the air, with a polluting stench that would bother the best of us “avoiders”. How do we unravel this?

Lets start here. What if I told you that money had no more power than a Pop-tart? What if money was neither a positive or negative commodity on its own, but carried the energy of YOUR intention with it? What if you were not at the influence of money, but rather that it was effect of your beliefs? Plainly put, our intentions are a mirrored extension of our beliefs.

If you have found yourself in polarities of judgment that money is either good or evil, perhaps allow yourself pause. It is a common false assumption that poor people are sad, and rich people happy. Some people may appear to not have much financially, but are living a balanced, meaningful and enriched live, and not lacking or struggling either. They are rich in a willingness to share what they have. Meanwhile, some people have a great deal but share little and have less balanced abundance in the rest of the categories in their life and struggle in other ways. Consider the energy you are projecting on money. Regardless of the side of the fence you sit on, if you perceive money brings “greed or isolation”, or “happiness and peace”, and given that you have the choice, do you want those energies to be tied to your relationship with money? Do you want to be in addiction or reaction to something that actually has the same power as a Pop-tart? How might your views be impacting your practice building?

Let´s get clear: such things as happiness, security, peace, confidence, and the ability to truly know our authentic identity is an inside job and are internal decisions, regardless of the circumstances we live in. For each of us, what might life look like if we aligned with money (and all forms of abundance we value) and have it work FOR us, to assist us rather than define us. What if we arrived at a sense of balance between need and want, and between giving and receiving, between lack and excess, and between our inner and outer world. With this balance, with money or without money, our internal sense of self, peace, image, or happiness would remain fully intact regardless of our external challenges. We might discover the middle road of true sustenance!

We all know that if we change our beliefs and intention, a domino effect will actually begin to occur. Any belief can be intentionally shifted so if we falsely believe it is money that will somehow bring us a positive experience like peace, confidence, self-identity, or respect, essentially, we are agreeing to hand over our internal power to something outside of ourselves. Bugger is, we are also often confused about what is best for us or we have illusions about what will make us happy. And, god forbid, should circumstances change (which they always do) and we are then left powerless over things we believe we “need” that are outside of us to control and keep. If we are at the affect of an external thing to miraculously bring us happiness, we are perpetually in a place of needing more, to fill that internal belief of “lacking.” How might life look if we also learned the skills of finding happiness in who we already are and in what we already have? It makes me think of the movie, “Its a Wonderful Life”. What if everything else beyond what we already are and have was simply icing on the cake!!

The Biology of Belief is a best selling book that revolutionizes the idea that it is our thoughts primarily manifest the state of our physical body and the assumption that predetermined DNA is the key manifestor is a fallacy. Additionally, “The Dark Side of the Light Chasers” is another amazing bestselling book that has the capacity to blow your mind and transform our lives by dismantling our own “judgments” that keep us stuck. Together, these two books can jumpstart internal shifts so that outer shifts can begin to manifest in your life. When you use your perception to unlock your potential, you will access your true internal and endless power source! You will have found your authentic and REAL YOU! Do what you love, and strive to be someone that you adore and I guarantee that abundance of all sorts of balanced abundance will meet you there!

Ignite your inner passion!

“Sing like nobody´s listening,
Live like it´s Heaven on Earth,
Work like you don´t need money,
Love like you´ve never been hurt,
And dance like no one´s watching.”

Attributed at various time to Souza, Rumi and others

Inner Fuel feeds the fires within us that allow us to experience and express passion and inspiration! Whether it is business or pleasure, without passion for what you do and no matter how hard you try, that sense of satisfaction at the end of the day is never truly there. However, you can always (find daily things around you that ignite your unique passion and inspiration) Around you and within you the world is an endless opportunity of moments and connection with inspired meaning. This state of inspiration is our natural state in fact. It is only when we allow other things to weigh down on it that we feel cut off from having a life of deep meaning, passion and inspiration. When we begin to shift the perceived obstacles that hinder our daily recognition and expression of this……LIFE CHANGES PROFOUNDLY……..look outside of your immediate surroundings or everyday routines for INNER Fuel to feed this process of igniting your need for passion!

Today, Inner Fuel seeks passion in 5Rhythms Dance Movement, a form of movement meditation developed by Gabrielle Roth. 5Rythymns dance is about releasing the dancer within each of us. It is a dance that doesn´t care about age, size, limitations, expectations, or experience. It is based on the concept that if you find the dance, you find yourself in a fluid and creative level.

Although the dance itself is simple, it is often the catalyst to creativity and deeper wellbeing through transformation.

In our own personal development, movement and breath are absolutely pivotal to help liberate energy and creates the necessary shift to release blocks. Literally, if you put your body in motion, your psyche follows, and from this place it can begin to transform. These blocks and heavy emotions that sit on top of our inspiration, blocking its expression can begin to dissolve via intention, expression and realignment of our perspectives.

The five individual rhythms are Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness. Together, they create a Wave or a ´movement meditation practice´. Instead of following any choreographed dance movements, each rhythm produces a different energy within the participant and each time you perform a 5Rhythms Wave, you will meet different aspects of yourself, with the experience only growing with practice.

There is a feeling that the dance sparks in the dancer, sometimes in the very first time they do it, and it never fails to deliver a profound shift. It can be a feeling of ´coming alive´ or ´coming to life´ and deepening your personal development.  Some experience a primal, more guttural, unarticulated call that rises up in them through the rhythm peak called Chaos where the dancers release their heads and shoulders as well as their ´mental hold on life and who they think they are´. This unleashed expression is something our practical world tends to not make room for. If people only understood the benefits of this healthy expression, and the repercussion of the lack of it, our individual views, and those of our society, health system and corporate world would likely value it in a much different way. The first step in any transformation is the state of awareness and understanding. From that point…the power of your health (physical, mental, emotional) rests in your own power of decision.

Gabrielle Roth developed the 5Rhythyms as a foundation for her work, a series of healing mps for the body, heart, mind, soul, and spirit to lead the dancer on a lifetime of self-discovery and reawakening. For many dancers, 5Rhythyms is not only the start of a lifelong journey but a place where they return time and time again to release, grow, and evolve in their own personal development.

What´s your INNER Fuel?

This Dance – Poem by Jewel Mathieson

We have come to be danced
Not the pretty dance
Not the pretty pretty, pick me, pick me dance
But the claw our way back into the belly
Of the sacred, sensual animal dance
The unhinged, unplugged, cat is out of its box dance
The holding the precious moment in the palms
of our hands and feet dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the jiffy booby, shake your booty for him dance
But the wring the sadness from our skin dance
The blow the chip off our shoulder dance.
The slap the apology from our posture dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the monkey see, monkey do dance
One two dance like you
One two three, dance like me dance
But the grave robber, tomb stalker
Tearing scabs and scars open dance
The rub the rhythm raw against our soul dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the nice, invisible, self-conscious shuffle
But the matted hair flying, voodoo mama
Shaman shaking ancient bones dance
The strip us from our casings, return our wings
Sharpen our claws and tongues dance
The shed dead cells and slip into
The luminous skin of love dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the hold our breath and wallow in the shallow end of the floor dance
But the meeting of the trinity: the body, breath and beat dance
The shout hallelujah from the top of our thighs dance
The mother may I? Yes
you may take ten giant leaps dance
The olly olly oxen free free free dance
The everyone can come to our heaven dance.

We have come to be danced
Where the kingdoms collide
In the cathedral of flesh
To burn back into the light
To unravel, to play, to fly, to pray
To root in skin sanctuary
