Decluttering Our Minds Accelerates Our Personal Development

Why should we simplify? Is a cluttered life the sign of a cluttered mind?

Dr. Gabor Maté, M.D. dedicates an entire chapter in Scattered Minds: A New Look at the Origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder to the importance of our physical space. Although he is writing about Attention Deficit Disorder, who in our culture of mass consumerism, latte-induced busy-ness, and two-second media bites does not have some experience with some of its effects on our wellbeing and personal development?

To combat those caffeine-agitated thoughts, here are some quick bits from Gabor´s insightful and inspired book that we feel are important to share with you to help create intentional transformation:

“Make a conscious choice about how to live.”

“No less than for children, conditions of his environment continue to have a direct and major impact on his emotions and thought processes…”

“Without the right conditions, the brain cannot develop new circuits or the mind new ways of relating to the world and to self. A person cannot become sane in the midst of the chaos she perpetuates around herself.”

“It is not a duty to clear some physical space so that his mind is not oppressed by clutter, but it is a sensible thing to do if the long term goal is development.”

“The adult with attention deficit disorder needs to know that the physical space she occupies can help to either harmonize or disorganize the mind.”

“Neglecting to honor their physical environment is to neglect themselves.”

Sweet, simple food for thought that fuels quality living and personal development.

The Essence of Gratitude and its Contribution to Your Happiness

“Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others.” Cicero

We all understand the word gratitude. Our mothers taught us to say ´please´ and ´thank you´ at the appropriate times and to write letters of thanks to distant relatives who spent birthday cards was an important lesson growing up.  However, was this really teaching us about gratitude at a deeper level? Does this form of gratitude help to foster happiness?

Gratitude is defined as ´a feeling of thankfulness and appreciation, as for gifts or favours´ and ´a sense of obligation´ by The Free Dictionary, and a ´state of being grateful´ by Merriam-Webster.  Do any of these definitions give us even a glimmer of what gratitude means or the strength and depth of this intensely potent word?

Words to help remember and reframe the gratitude in us all:

“Saying thank you is more than good manners. It is good spirituality.” Alfred Painter

“Gratitude is riches. Complaint is poverty.” Doris Day

“To speak gratitude is courteous and pleasant, to enact gratitude is generous and noble, but to live gratitude is to touch Heaven.” Johannes A Gaertner

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity…. It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow.” Melodie Beattie

“The deepest craving of human nature is the need to be appreciated.” William James

What are you thankful for? Some people believe that when they get what they want, that a state of gratitude will then follow. The problem with this thinking is that if we do not get what we want, our natural state of gratitude (and by association, happiness) is being held hostage.

In reality, it is when a person wants and appreciates what they already have that true and natural gratitude becomes a part of their present and every day lives.

“Gratefulness is the key to a happy life that we hold in our hands, because if we are not grateful, then no matter how much we have we will not be happy — because we will always want to have something else or something more.” Brother David Steindl-Rast

Across all of humanity, some of the greatest factors to a life of happiness and gratitude are a meaningful and authentic connection to others and the ability to contribute.

Although Christmas is behind us, the movie It´s a Wonderful Life is one of the most beautiful demonstrations of gratitude reframed.

Maybe it is time to find a cause that ignites not only the gratitude in your soul but also the passion in your actions.

A couple of places to look in order spark ideas as ways to connect and contribute:

Idealist.org – “an interactive site where people and organizations can exchange resources and ideas, locate opportunities and supporters, and take steps toward building a world where all people can lead free and dignified lives”.

Wikipedia Canadian Non-profit Organization Directory – a list of all Canadian non-profit organizations

Global Alignment recommends doing your own research before donating time or money to any charity or cause. However, these are great resource for learning and understanding about the many types of organizations available that need your help.

FACT: Passion, Movement and Expression Advance Your Personal Development

Ignite your inner passion!

“Sing like nobody´s listening,
Live like it´s Heaven on Earth,
Work like you don´t need money,
Love like you´ve never been hurt,
And dance like no one´s watching.”

Attributed at various time to Souza, Rumi and others

Inner Fuel feeds the fires within us that allow us to experience and express passion and inspiration! Whether it is business or pleasure, without passion for what you do and no matter how hard you try, that sense of satisfaction at the end of the day is never truly there. However, you can always (find daily things around you that ignite your unique passion and inspiration) Around you and within you the world is an endless opportunity of moments and connection with inspired meaning. This state of inspiration is our natural state in fact. It is only when we allow other things to weigh down on it that we feel cut off from having a life of deep meaning, passion and inspiration. When we begin to shift the perceived obstacles that hinder our daily recognition and expression of this……LIFE CHANGES PROFOUNDLY……..look outside of your immediate surroundings or everyday routines for INNER Fuel to feed this process of igniting your need for passion!

Today, Inner Fuel seeks passion in 5Rhythms Dance Movement, a form of movement meditation developed by Gabrielle Roth. 5Rythymns dance is about releasing the dancer within each of us. It is a dance that doesn´t care about age, size, limitations, expectations, or experience. It is based on the concept that if you find the dance, you find yourself in a fluid and creative level.

Although the dance itself is simple, it is often the catalyst to creativity and deeper wellbeing through transformation.

In our own personal development, movement and breath are absolutely pivotal to help liberate energy and creates the necessary shift to release blocks. Literally, if you put your body in motion, your psyche follows, and from this place it can begin to transform. These blocks and heavy emotions that sit on top of our inspiration, blocking its expression can begin to dissolve via intention, expression and realignment of our perspectives.

The five individual rhythms are Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness. Together, they create a Wave or a ´movement meditation practice´. Instead of following any choreographed dance movements, each rhythm produces a different energy within the participant and each time you perform a 5Rhythms Wave, you will meet different aspects of yourself, with the experience only growing with practice.

There is a feeling that the dance sparks in the dancer, sometimes in the very first time they do it, and it never fails to deliver a profound shift. It can be a feeling of ´coming alive´ or ´coming to life´ and deepening your personal development.  Some experience a primal, more guttural, unarticulated call that rises up in them through the rhythm peak called Chaos where the dancers release their heads and shoulders as well as their ´mental hold on life and who they think they are´. This unleashed expression is something our practical world tends to not make room for. If people only understood the benefits of this healthy expression, and the repercussion of the lack of it, our individual views, and those of our society, health system and corporate world would likely value it in a much different way. The first step in any transformation is the state of awareness and understanding. From that point…the power of your health (physical, mental, emotional) rests in your own power of decision.

Gabrielle Roth developed the 5Rhythyms as a foundation for her work, a series of healing mps for the body, heart, mind, soul, and spirit to lead the dancer on a lifetime of self-discovery and reawakening. For many dancers, 5Rhythyms is not only the start of a lifelong journey but a place where they return time and time again to release, grow, and evolve in their own personal development.

This Dance – Poem by Jewel Mathieson

We have come to be danced
Not the pretty dance
Not the pretty pretty, pick me, pick me dance
But the claw our way back into the belly
Of the sacred, sensual animal dance
The unhinged, unplugged, cat is out of its box dance
The holding the precious moment in the palms
of our hands and feet dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the jiffy booby, shake your booty for him dance
But the wring the sadness from our skin dance
The blow the chip off our shoulder dance.
The slap the apology from our posture dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the monkey see, monkey do dance
One two dance like you
One two three, dance like me dance
But the grave robber, tomb stalker
Tearing scabs and scars open dance
The rub the rhythm raw against our soul dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the nice, invisible, self-conscious shuffle
But the matted hair flying, voodoo mama
Shaman shaking ancient bones dance
The strip us from our casings, return our wings
Sharpen our claws and tongues dance
The shed dead cells and slip into
The luminous skin of love dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the hold our breath and wallow in the shallow end of the floor dance
But the meeting of the trinity: the body, breath and beat dance
The shout hallelujah from the top of our thighs dance
The mother may I? Yes
you may take ten giant leaps dance
The olly olly oxen free free free dance
The everyone can come to our heaven dance.

We have come to be danced
Where the kingdoms collide
In the cathedral of flesh
To burn back into the light
To unravel, to play, to fly, to pray
To root in skin sanctuary
We have come to be danced!
We have come.
