We often think of a vacation as a trip, off to some far-flung destination away from our immediate surroundings (at least I do!). We can spend days and even months anticipating the trip, telling ourselves that “being away” is the ONLY time, we can allow ourselves to fully relax and joyful.
But when time or budget doesn’t allow an “away” holiday, what are your options to get the break you need? Most people don’t consider that it’s actually possible to experience this feeling of relaxation in the comforts of your home or city. In truth, our feelings of relaxation or a break, are largely influenced by our outlook, rather than our physical surroundings. As such, creating an environment or ritual that allows us to unwind and relax at home, while giving ourselves a break from our regular routine can often be the ideal setting for a staycation.
Freedom Beyond Responsibilities: Fresh Eyes See the Sweetness of Life
It’s all too common for our home to be distracting. You may feel the pull of responsibilities, unfinished projects and a long to-do list. The key to making your home a mini oasis or mini vacation, is to accept that any messes or tasks can be dealt with later and reaffirm that you are allowing yourself time and space to feel relaxed, have fun and do things outside of your regular routine.
Then, set the mood.
Allow yourself to make your everyday special. Play music, cook something that you’ve been wanting to try, take a class or make time for a hobby. Find a place in your community park (or backyard) and nestle into a chair with a great book. Do an activity in your own home or city, that reminds you of being on a vacation and allow yourself to be transported to a more relaxing, and self-indulgent time.
So perhaps this summer, it’s time to trade in your “task list” with a “wish list” and bring the magical parts of a holiday into your everyday life. It may be just the kickstart you need to carve out a more balanced way of life that embraces the sweetness of doing what you want, or doing nothing at all – and LOVING IT!
