Is it possible to miss our old habits?

Are Habits from Your Past Preventing the Future You Desire & Deserve?

We live in a Western society where our left-brain focus is on the future most of the time. If you are not sure if that is true, consider any of your new year’s resolutions, goals that you’ve set, and any dreams that you may want to achieve. They’re all focused on the future and they all involve a goal and the process of CHANGE.

When you work so hard to reach your goals, it can sometimes be a surprise to find out that you may miss your old habits. You may even be reading this, contemplating if that is even possible. Well, I assure you that it is!

From a “change cycle” point of view, when we miss our old habits, we mourn the loss of our previous self, as we evolve into the next chapter of our being. Sometimes we yearn the loss of unhealthy habits and sometimes we yearn the loss of healthy ones that may appear to become less important as we consider new priorities. The trick is to be able to assess if a habit is healthy and worth restoring, or better left in your past.

How Unhealthy Habits Seduce Us Back into Stuck-ness

As we set a goal and move towards achieve it, part of that skill requires us to face and move through obstacles, barriers and old believe systems that weigh us down and keep us stuck. This sort of change naturally produces a lot of fear and anxiety and insecurity. The habitual feelings, beliefs and actions of our previous self, if paid too much attention to, are the very things that prevent us from going through transformation that allows us to go through our own personal evolution that is needed to reach our goals. Our old way of being, doing and thinking can feel like the devil we know. And strangely, the seduction of that familiarity comes the illusion of safety and the return to an unhealthy “default place.” Regardless if it’s overindulging, negative talk, avoiding decisions or steps to achieve our goal or giving into our fears; the process of positive change and personal evolution require us to take risks, expand beyond our self-defeating habits and live on the outer edge of our comfort zone.

When Healthy Habits Need to be Revived & Utilized

As we all evolve and move through the change cycle, it is worth pausing long enough to consider balance through the entire process. If we become so focused on achieving a goal that it starts to rob us of balance in our life, its time to adjust course. Change is never easy.

A normal changes cycle naturally increases our anxiety, amplifies our insecurities and can overwhelm us in the process. Managing the pace of change and our wellbeing requires regular elements such as self-care, self-compassion and the use of creativity, intuition and innovation. These elements at first glance may not seems as essential in reaching your goal, but they in fact are the fuel that keeps your engine running as you strive towards your goal.

How Balance Equals Breakthrough

The trick about understanding change and your own habits, is about discerning what is a healthy habit that helps us to evolve, and what is an unhealthy habit that is more about “avoiding” your personal evolution process.

All parts of us – body, mind and soul – need to work together to achieve positive and sustainable change. We need time to adjust as we let go of the habits that no longer serve us. Once we have greater awareness of how to create “health” and “balanced” transformation in our life, we can confidently go in the direction our own evolution and maintain health, balance and welling in the process.
