With the Holidays fast approaching, many of us are looking ahead and anticipating what the holidays will look like. Perhaps it’s about upcoming celebrations, a long to-do or shopping list, and the exciting buzz of preparations for gatherings and surprises. For others, the reflection of Christmas past, that included loved ones or cherished moments may weigh on expectations of what this holiday will be, as it draws closer.
If you are considering Christmas past, or Christmas future, the reality is that NOW is really the time that you have the most influence over. By being present, you choose to notice what is in front of you, and within you right now. And where contemplation about the past and planning for the future each have an important role in creating a healthy and balanced life, so does the present.
As we build emotional and intellectual maturity, we can notice our feelings, thoughts and internal landscape, and then choose what part of that serves you and what does not. And given that holidays and family events tend to bring a lot is most people’s lives, being in a mindful present state, allows us to move away from worrying, or wondering about what’s coming next, or being haunted by regret or longing for the past. By being present, each moment is completely new and nothing like it has happened before or will happen again. It is a true gift of peace and wonder, that you can give yourself, as you prepare for the holidays.
